DISCOVERING MY UNIVERSE.
My name is María Rosúa and I am a contemporary jewellery designer. Since I finished school I dedicate myself to creating jewels that are born from a fusion between nature, experiences and techniques that I learned with different teachers, in different countries, in my constant search for knowledge. My jewellery is inspired by what surrounds me, in the nature that surrounds us and teaches us: flowers, fruits, animals, plants, bodies, ideas, intuitions. Everything that moves me finds a shape in the metal. I work mainly with silver and brass, which become the canvas where I express stories and feelings that are transformed into a jewel, they combine shape, colour and texture in a unique way, thanks to techniques that I have been developing over the years, where watercolour on metal has a fundamental role. This technique gives each flower, each leaf or each fruit its own life. It is a slow and careful process, where every detail is designed so that the jewel is not just an accessory, but an experience. Sitting in front of the metal is like finding a blank sheet, where the game is paramount, where there are no limits, I consider the metal a very generous material, because it can not only be moulded, but it accepts to be combined with other materials, such as pigments, woods, ceramics, textiles. Each jewel tells a story, a lived experience. For example, figs are part of a very special collection that I developed during my pregnancy. At the door of my house there was a fig tree, and while the gestation was going through, that tree gave us brevas and figs. It was a silent and generous accompaniment during that deep time, and from that experience the collection of figs was born, as a memory that will always accompany me. Each piece is not just a design, but a fragment of my life, turned into metal and colour. The magenta pigment that I use to give colour to this collection is also special. It was given to me by a friend who brought it from somewhere lost in India, after 5 years of painting figs, I still have a little of this pigment, the day it is finished figs will continue to be born but I'm sure to tell another story. I enjoyed my childhood on the Argentine coast, in the countryside, where nature is generous. I grew up among oaks, ceibos, cracklings and beetles. That closeness with the earth, with the natural cycles, with the sounds of summer and the smell of the trees, deeply marked my way of seeing the world. Those memories are still alive in my way of creating. Today I live in the Mediterranean, on the island of Formentera, a place of arid land, of rocks that look like moons, of blue and transparent sea. Although very different from that brown river of my childhood, this landscape also inspires me. Life under the sea, the fish, the textures of the sand, the shapes of the algae, the grapes and pomegranates that grow here, everything moves me and turns into a jewel. On every trip around the world I collect images of plants and flowers, I keep them in logs where I draw and write, and then those images become part of my creative universe. I feel comfortable designing earrings, if you go through my work you will see that the object that is most repeated, I create giant earrings when developing a collection, in this way I begin to develop the language and ideas in each of my jewels, then I adapt them, I make them smaller, I transform them into rings, necklaces or bracelets. Among my creations you will find jewellery with flowers such as poppies, daisies, hydrangeas, lilacs and lavenders. I also make jewellery in the shape of fruits: figs, pomegranates, grapes, lemons, tangerines. There are animals that are repeated in my collections: birds, cats, insects, dragonflies, crickets, dogs, each with a story behind it. Some jewels are large, fun and colourful, designed for those who want to stand out; others are more delicate, small, subtle. They all share something in common: they are made to last, to be transformed with those who use them, to become a kind of everyday talisman. I firmly believe in a form of production that is consistent with what I think and feel. That's why we work with a slow fashion logic, without massive stock or mass production. Each piece is made to order, respecting the real times of the artisanal work. We listen to each person who arrives with an idea or desire, and we adapt the pieces to their tastes: colours, sizes, finishes, combinations. Many times we even create together. Because we don't just make jewellery, we build bonds. We work among friends in my workshop, which is located inside my house, the workshop became a space for meeting, laughter, thinking about each other among my community, while we reflect and think about the world, how to do it a little better every day, our hands work to create each of our jewels that travel the world, and let's hope that it spreads a little this desire to build a fairer, more loving world. The process of creating a jewel begins with the choice of metal. Brass and silver are my main materials. First I draw the desired shape on the metal plate, then I cut each figure by hand with a fine saw. Once openwork, each edge and surface is filed to eliminate imperfections, smooth contours and prepare the piece for subsequent assembly. This stage requires attention and patience: it is where the jewel begins to take shape. Once all the parts are ready, you move on to the soldier process. Through heat and welding, one the different pieces together. Then, they are immersed in a solution of pickling salts to clean the residues from the fire. From there, the polishing begins: by hand, with cloths and pastes, I polish the metal until I achieve the desired finish. It can be glossy, matte or satin, depending on what each piece requires or the client chooses. In some cases, the jewel receives a gold-plated. The gold bath retains the lustre over time, while the raw brass tends to darken. There are customers who prefer that natural ageing of the metal, while others prioritise maintaining the original luminosity. Each choice is valid and says something about who is going to wear that piece. After the metallic finish, a new stage begins: painting. It is at this moment when the metal comes to life. I paint each piece of jewellery by hand, using different techniques depending on what I want to express. Sometimes I use nail polishes, other times patinas or watercolours. Each technique has its drying times, its particularities. Therefore, the production of a jewel can take several days. It is essential that each layer adheres well, that the colours quench with patience. That wait is also part of the process. All this manual work is what allows each piece to be unique and have its own soul. I want those who buy my jewellery to know everything behind it: the working hours, the noble materials, the aesthetic and emotional search. Each piece has its history and each story has its time. We accompany that journey from the first contact until the jewel arrives at its new home. My workshop is at the heart of this project. That's where everything is born: from the first sketch to the last touch of paint. Each earring, each necklace, each ring or brooch is created with love, attention and dedication. And although I produce locally, our pieces travel all over the world. We ship to different countries and we take care that each jewel arrives safe, in perfect condition, with a packaging also designed as part of the experience. The relationship with those who choose our jewels is close and horizontal. We are interested in knowing for what occasion you choose a piece: if it is a gift, if it is for a wedding, a party, a special event, a festival or simply because you want something for yourself. We want your choice to be conscious, emotional, personal. That's why we also accompany with a blog, where we share reflections, advice on jewellery care, information about our techniques, differences between materials, ideas for gifts and more. Our way of making jewellery is crossed by a collective look. We do not believe in design as something individualistic, but as something that is shared, dialogued and built in relation to others. We bet on craftsmanship as a form of resistance against the disposable, the immediate, standardisation. Each piece is unique, and that makes it valuable. Not for its rarity, but for its ability to connect with whoever chooses it. In our jewellery you will find flowers, yes. But also memory, care, joy, play. You will find stories and symbols that may refer you to your childhood, to a beloved place, to a moment that you want to keep. You will find jewellery with identity, with root, with soul. Although many people discover us looking for flower jewellery or jewellery with fruits, they stay for something deeper: for the experience offered by a piece that does not respond to fashions, but to pulses. For a jewel that not only adorns, but accompanies. We have participated in fairs, exhibitions, collaborations with other artists and brands that share an ethical vision of design. Each encounter strengthens our conviction that another way of creating and consuming is possible. We like to think that our jewellery is not only beautiful, but also ethical, sustainable and meaningful. That's why we also create jewellery in different materials, so that they are accessible to all pockets, we do not see jewellery as luxury. Many customers tell us that our pieces are transformed into part of their history. That remind them of their grandmother, a beloved garden, an important celebration. Those stories feed us and inspire us to continue creating. We care about the symbolic as well as the aesthetic. And that's why our jewels don't follow trends, they follow pulses, intuitions, natural cycles. I invite you to tour this space, to be surprised, to write to us if you have questions, special requests or if you simply want to share an idea with us. I am here to help you choose that piece that becomes your next amulet, in that gift that excites, in your jewel for an important day or for every day. Before choosing one of our pieces, we want to tell you something important. Our shipments depart from Formentera, that small island in the middle of the Mediterranean, an island within another island. Living and creating here has some magic, fertile isolation, but it also implies that times move with another rhythm. Therefore, your jewel may not arrive right away. Sometimes it takes longer, especially at certain times of the year where ships and couriers have their own times. We ask for your patience: in the same way that each piece is made over low heat, your journey also needs its time. We think it's worth the wait. We also want to talk to you about care. Our jewellery is made to last, to accompany you for many years, but like everything that is done delicately, they require attention. If your jewel is made only of silver or has a gold bath, there is no problem if it gets wet: you can wear it in your day to day with peace of mind. But if you chose one of our hand-painted pieces, we ask you for a little more affection. Although nothing happens if it occasionally gets wet, continuous contact with water can gradually turn off the colours. Think of it as a painting: we don't shower with a painting hanging around our necks, right? Also avoid contact with aggressive products such as detergents, perfumes, creams or cleansers. Every time you wash your hands, wash the dishes or immerse yourself in the sea, remember that you carry a living, sensitive, unique jewel. Taking care of her is also a way to extend her story. Because each piece is designed not only to adorn, but to accompany you, to be filled with your days, your memories, your movement. And we want it to shine, with all its colours intact. Thank you for trusting the jewellery made with hands, with time and with sense. Thank you for supporting local production, artisanal creativity and conscious design. Thank you for making this garden bloom with us.
